Letters From the In-Between: perhaps nobody taught you what creates your reality

Deep within my mind they start to brew,
The thoughts that shape the things I do,
They simmer and boil, a mental stew,
And spark the feelings that ensue.
So be mindful of each thought you hold,
And the emotions that unfold,
For the actions that you sow with zeal,
Will lead to outcomes that you'll feel.

I know they taught you how to take care of your body.
They taught you not to eat just anything you found on the ground.
Not to take candy from strangers.
To wash your hands.
To make sure food had not gone bad before eating it.
But let me ask you something.
Did anybody ever teach you how to protect your mind?
Did anybody ever teach you to be as careful with what enters your thoughts as you are with what enters your body?
Did anybody ever teach you to question the ideas that other people instilled inside you?
Did anybody ever teach you that not every thought deserves to be believed?
Because a child's mind is a lot like a baby.
It grabs everything.
It puts everything in its mouth.
It does not yet know the difference between what nourishes it and what harms it.
That is why it needs someone paying attention.
Someone willing to take away what could hurt it.
And perhaps nobody taught you that the mind works the very same way.
Ideas enter.
Opinions enter.
Beliefs enter.
The things you hear at home.
The things you are told at school.
The things you learn through religion.
The stories you watch on television.
The voices you hear online.
Everything enters.
And the difference is that when something harms your body, you usually know right away.
Your stomach hurts.
You feel sick.
The consequence is obvious.
But the mind does not work that way.
Ideas enter quietly.
And sometimes years pass before you discover what they have done.
Because an idea becomes a thought.
A repeated thought becomes a belief.
A belief becomes an identity.
And an identity eventually becomes a reality.
That is why so many people try to change their lives without realizing they are still feeding the same beliefs that created the reality they want to escape.
And perhaps that is the missing piece.
Not everything you think is true.
Not everything you hear deserves to be believed.
Not everything you were taught deserves to stay.
Some ideas need to be questioned.
Others need to be released.
And some should have never found a home inside you.
Today I understand that protecting my mind is one of the deepest forms of self-love.
Because the mind is a garden.
I cannot control every seed the wind brings.
But I can decide which ones I water.
Which ones I question.
And which ones I allow to take root.
Because in the end, not everything you hear deserves to become a belief.
And not every belief deserves to become your life.
Your reality changes when you begin protecting the thing that creates it.
What I know now
The mind needs nourishment too.
The ideas you consume today can become the beliefs you live tomorrow.
Discernment is a form of protection.
Carry this with you
I can choose what enters and what remains in my mind.
Before you go…
What belief, message, or idea have you been carrying for years without ever questioning whether it is truly yours?
If you feel like sharing, I would love to read you in the comments.
